Configuration Management Database

A CMDB is a configuration management database: a structured record of all the components of an IT system in terms of their requirements and relationships. They're pretty proprietary, and stuff like federating corporations hangs pretty heavily on being able to glue these things together.

You would think there'd be a standard for this, but there isn't, yet. A multi-vendor group called the CMDB Federation has, however, almost finished a draft of a surface query standard, but it falls far short of a standard for actually federating CMDBs.

Great point about CMDB

This poster has a very good observation. This will carry over into a lot of cloud discussions, particularly as business applications get "Cloudified."
