It's Pretty Cool, Actually
I've spent a couple hours in demos of this, given by IBM's Sandy Carlson. It's pretty remarkable. What they've done, basically, is develop a small set of web interfaces to virtual world region servers -- the system can apparently work with Second Life or OpenSim -- plus a few task-dedicated dialogs for Sametime. You can set up a meeting in Sametime and post it to a 'virtual conference room.' The associated virtual world platform then (haven't figured this part out yet) either instantiates or opens access-control to a conference room facility, and gives you and your collaborators direct web links to 'teleport' there. Once you're in the space, you can click to open a shared-files window to share documents, show a presentation, and there's a library of 3D tools for point collaboration, like a calendar with built-in sticky notes.
On balance, I think it gives more bang for the buck than videoconferencing. My colleagues seem to like it -- obviously, it takes some getting used to, but it's cool. I can now honestly say that I've flown around the room during a business meeting.
